Story

Tim Gray and I have been recording my tunes for over twelve years now, resulting in two albums, Dancing My Dreams (2008) and Bluebird Tattoos (2012).  We're joined by keyboardist Tim Randles, who provided the piano, B4 organ and horn parts.  Tim Gray created the  great bass line and the percussion.

Lyrics

Crazy Over You

I’m going a little bit crazy, going a little mad.

I don’t know how to deal with all these feelings I have.

I’m up, I’m down, I’m lost, I’m found, I’m tossed around, too.

I’m going a little bit crazy over you.

I’m going a little bit crazy, a little insane.

Am I out here all alone, or do you feel the same?

I’m here, not there and everywhere is nowhere without you.

I’m going a little bit crazy, it's true.

Yes, I guess I’m crazy and I’m kind of confused.

One minute I’m a happy guy, the next I’ve got the blues.

You’re the ice cream in my soda it’s true.

But you’re also that little rock in my shoe.

I’m going a little bit crazy, a little bit nuts.

Wondering about the ifs, the ands and the buts.

Could be never or forever or whatever, too.

I’m going a little bit crazy over you.

Story

We really had fun with this.  Tim Randles started it with the jumping piano. Tim Gray added percussion and the fabulous bass part, the vocal harmonies and engineered.   Rick Levin put in the great guitar parts.  This is a classic studio production.  Tim Gray and I try to get together 2-3 times a month for an evening at his studio and we just keep tinkering and polishing until we're happy.  We're happy with this one.

Lyrics

I Gotta See You Again.

I must have had a life before I met you,

I must have had a lot of things to do.

I must have had a million great ideas then,

Now all I can think about is you.

I had clever conversations

Sitting with a friend or two,

But I don’t have time for that anymore

Now all I can think about is you.

Bridge

I thought you’d lose your grip and I’d be fine in a while

But now I admit, I’ve been caught by a crazy smile.

Chorus

And whoa, whoa, ain’t no use to pretend.

Whoa, whoa, I gotta see you again.

I used to get a lot of my work done

In an easy hour or two

But now I’m just staring at photographs

Now all I can think about is you.

Bridge

I thought you’d lose your grip and I’d be fine in a while

But now I admit, I’ve been caught by a beautiful smile.

Chorus

And whoa, whoa, ain’t no use to pretend.

Whoa, whoa, I gotta see you again.

BLUEBIRD TATTOOS

Bluebird tattoos on the back of her arms

He could see them as she flew away.

Bluebird tattoos on the back of her arms

Now she doesn’t even have to wave.

He waits so patiently to see if she’ll be his wife.

Her only answer is blue tattoos for life.

He aches for love to be so much more more than win or lose.

If only love could last as long as blue tattoos.

Bluebird tattoos on the back of her arms

He could see them as she flew away.

Bluebird tattoos on the back of her arms

She doesn’t even have to wave.

How long can love fly on when the wax is done?

Is this the price for flying too close to the sun?

Who’ll mend this raggedy broken wing back to flight?

Who'll light the scarlet heart and watch it burn all night?

He makes these castaway footprints there in the sand?

He shakes his head as if he didn't really understand

These Blue bird tattoos on the back of her arms

So he would see them as she flew away.

Blue bird tattoos on the back of her arms

Now she doesn’t even have to wave.

Lyrics

THERE ARE TIMES

There are times your smile is a glow,

Falling soft, quiet as new snow.

There are times your laugh is like a song,

Rising clear, coloring the dawn.

There are times your beauty shines so bright

I must turn my eyes away or lose them to your light.

There are times my love seems a mistake,

Still it grows as if for its own sake.

Lyrics

IF IT WERE MY HEART

Silver light on the water,

Half a moon laughing down at the sand.

Walking with me, her shoes in her hand,

Oh, what a lucky man.

Oh yes, I’m a lucky man

How can this woman love me

When I branded her heart with such pain?

Are we just setting it all up again?

Then what would we explain?

Can love ever be explained?

Now when the moon starts to pull the tide,

Does the ocean’s heart run and hide?

Or does it climb up a wave and take a ride?

If it were my heart,,,

If it were my heart,,,

If it were my heart,,,

Swimming out past the breakers,

Floating, holding each other still.

The sea wind whispers, “Surrender your will

And your hearts can be fulfilled.

Let your dreams be fulfilled.”

Now when the moon starts to pull the tide,

Does the ocean’s heart run and hide?

Or does it climb up the wave and take a ride?

If it were my heart,,,

If it were my heart,,,

If it were my heart,,,

I’d take the ride.

Lyrics

We’re Gonna Make It

It wasn’t such an easy life,

Her Dad died when she was four.

Her Momma pulled the kids beside her,

And said, “This isn’t what we asked for.

But we’re all in this together,

And we’re all gonna work it out,

Remember that we’ve got each other,

Any time you start to doubt

That we can make it.

Look into these eyes of mine,

We’re gonna make it,

As long as we keep trying,

We’re gonna make it.”

It wasn’t such an easy love,

They came together in fits and starts

She’d pull him in, then push him away,

Wanting his love, but guarding her heart.

Her Momma wasn’t all that sure,

That he was ever gonna be good enough,

One night his baby grabbed his arm,

When she could see that he was getting fed up,

And she said, “Hey,

We’re gonna make it.

Look into these eyes of mine,

We’re gonna make it,

As long as we keep trying,

We’re gonna make it.

We’re in this together.

We’re gonna make it,

Cause we’ve got each other.

We’re gonna make it.”

And when they planned their wedding day,

She had one last big question:

Who would walk her down the aisle,

He had a sweet suggestion.

And there he stood, the nervous groom,

All eyes on the back of the room,

And he could see the way they smiled,

As his bride walked up the aisle,

On her Momma’s arm.

We’re gonna make it,

Look into these eyes of mine,

We’re gonna make it,

As long as we keep trying,

We’re gonna make it,

We’re in this together.

We’re gonna make it,

Cause we’ve got each other.

We’re gonna make it,

Look into these eyes of mine.

We’re gonna make it,

As long as we keep trying.

We’re gonna make it.

Lyrics

The River of Life

Mother of wonder, daughter and wife,

Flowing in you is the river of life.

Your children grow in you, then you grow up with them.

Until they cast off into the mystery wind.

Mother of Worry, mother of faith,

Unable to rest until your babies are safe.

Protecting and holding, and slowly letting go.

You are the banks so the river can flow.

And the river will carry you along, along.

The river will carry you along.

The children you deliver you will carry like the river.

You will carry the river along.

Mother of nurture, mother of growth,

You feed so many with your body and soul.

You hold back the darkness and encourage the light.

Wrap your wings of laughter round them tight.

And the river will carry you along, along.

The river will carry you along.

The children you deliver you will carry like the river.

You will carry the river along.

Sometimes it’s all too much,

When it’s out of your hands and beyond your touch.

Sometimes, you’ve just got to sit still,

And let the river flood, let the waters spill.

And the river will carry you along, along, along.

The river’s gonna carry you along.

The children you deliver you will carry like the river.

You will carry the river along.

Lyrics

IMPOSSIBLE LOVE

You walk in and say hello,

With that luminescent glow,

That leaves me standing still, unable to move.

So I sit and breathe your name,

Asking once again the same

Old questions I don’t want the answers to:

Where in your heart am I?

Am I fading, or beginning to fly?

Am I painfully low or improbably high?

Where in your heart am I?

Where in your dreams am I?

Am I falling or floating in the sky?

Am I ever the trembling behind your closed eye?

Where in your dreams am I?

Are you a kiss or a curse or a sigh?

When you call out can you hear my reply?

Are you attempting to find in my eyes

A place just for us?

Is there a list of those like me who try?

Where would I be if I dared to apply?

Would you just sit there and cast a dim eye

On impossible love?

Am I a kiss, or a curse, or a sigh?

When I call out, do you ever reply?

Am I pretending to find in your eyes

A place just for us?

Do you just want me to stay far away?

But how could you tell me you want me to stay?

Or does the flame beckon the moth in to play

With impossible love?

Where in your heart am I?

Will we ever be walking side by side?

Dancing in the surf, playing tag with the tide?

Where in your heart am I?

Where in your dreams am I?

Where in your heart am I?

SOMEHOW

I’ve got a wandering eye, hell, I’ve got a wandering brain.

No wonder that I drive the poor woman insane.

But somehow she’s still putting up with me.

I’ve got the sense of humor of a twelve-year old boy,

And I guess my greatest talent is being annoying.

But somehow she’s still putting up with me.

Now I’m not the neatest guy she could ever find,

I got this way of leaving half my stuff behind,

But that’s so if she wants to find me, she can’t fail,

All she’s gotta do is just follow the trail.

I’m two parts lazy and one part rude,

And she gives me that look if I say something crude,

But somehow she’s still putting up with me.

I say she’s hard of hearing, she says that I mumble,

But she’s right there to catch me any time that I stumble,

And somehow she’s still putting up with me.

I guess she’s right, I drink and smoke too much,

So I’m here to tell you that enough is enough.

I’m gonna make her a promise I know I can keep,

I’m never gonna drink again—in my sleep.

I guess I’ve got a tiny tendency to tease,

But I get my greatest pleasure out of trying to please.

Maybe that’s why she’s still putting up with me.

She’s the prettiest thing I think ever was made.

And if she really likes this song, I might even get—a laugh

Cause somehow she’s – I don’t understand it,

Somehow she’s—it’s a mystery to me.

Somehow she’s still putting up with me.

Lyrics

Flying Away

Standing on this porch next to me,

Staring out at this big, big world.

Now I can hardly believe,

This young woman is my baby girl,

Now she’s worrying about how crazy this world seems,

Trying to figure out how to keep all her dreams from

Flying away,

Out of reach and so far away.

So she pulls them near,

To hold them here,

And she tries to find her fears

And send them flying away.

Standing on this porch where she played,

Her hair so tangled, her eyes so clear.

Showing us the little things she made.

Simple treasures we’ll keep through the years

That seem to fly away like birds in the wind.

I try to hold on to them, but then they begin to go

Flying away,

Out of reach and so far away.

So I pull them near,

To hold them here,

And I try to find my fears

And send them flying away.

I know my greatest role is to

Keep them safe and give them room to grow.

Just so when they have their own,

They’ll keep them safe and help them grow.

I know it’s time to let her go, but…

Standing on this porch saying goodby,

Your bags are packed, you’re ready to leave.

So much excitement in your eyes,

Now I hope you can truly believe,

We’ll always be there to help you reach for your star,

But no matter what, we’ll love you just as you are, as you go

Flying away,

Out of reach and so far away.

So we pull you near, to hold you here,

And we try to find our fears

And send them flying away.

So we pull them near, as if to hold them here,

And we try to find our fears

And send them flying away.

We send them flying away.

Lyrics

Your Own True Love

Now you’re asking about the secrets of true love,

The great mysteries of the heart.

How do you keep out the doubt, and not just give up,

Watching yourselves falling apart?

Some say you’ve gotta get lucky, and maybe at first that’s true.

But it ain’t luck that’ll keep you together.

It’s some of the hardest and best work you’ll ever do,

Learning how to just love each other.

Chorus

Cause you make your own true love.

It doesn’t just fall from the sky.

Yes, you make your own true love.

Every time you keep trying.

There’s a reason we call it “making love.”

And you’ve got to remake it all the time.

The only way to not give up is by not giving up.

The only way to try is by trying.

Chorus

I don’t know where love comes from, or where it goes.

But I know it’s not magic that makes it grow.

The only real secrets about love that I know

Are to forgive real quickly and kiss real slow.

Chorus

Lyrics

Words to the Wise

Haste makes waste, we’ve often been told,

But he who hesitates is lost.

These kinds of words to the wise can hold gold,

But sometimes they seem to get crossed.

Like absence will only make her heart grow fonder,

Hopes the guy going away.

But out of sight is out of mind,

Smiles his buddy who’s decided to stay.

A word to the wise is sufficient,

But on the other hand, talk is cheap.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

But you better look before you leap.

If birds of a feather like to flock together,

Then why do opposites attract?

Seek and you will find, but remember

Curiosity killed the cat.

A word to the wise about words to the wise.

You better think twice about any advice.

Words to the wise mostly seem to relate,

To being wise enough to know which to take.

Words to the wise, comes as no surprise,

Will depend upon your point of view.

Did you ever wonder if the early worm,

Thought he got up just a little too soon?

Too many cooks are gonna spoil the broth,

But many hands make light work.

You can’t teach an old dog any new tricks,

But you’re never too old to learn.

Never put off til tomorrow,

What you can get done today,

But you gotta wait to cross the bridge til you get there,

I’ve heard some smart people say.

A word to the wise about words to the wise.

You better think twice about any advice.

Words to the wise mostly seem to relate,

To being wise enough to know which to take.

Words to the wise, comes as no surprise,

Will depend upon your point of view.

Did you ever wonder if the poor old early worm,

Was wishing that he’d slept til noon?.

The Lottery is a tax on folks bad at math,

But you can’t win if you don’t play.

You can’t have your cake and eat it too,

But what else would you do with cake?

I’ll stop now cause silence is golden…

Bit the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The early bird might get his worm.

But the second mouse gets the cheese.

Lyrics

New Old Memories

All around us, people talk and laugh,

Sharing old memories and reliving the past.

These old memories can be kind of fun.

But I’m thinking there’s still new yet to be done.

Let’s make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

Let’s make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

Someone reminds me of some old forgotten joke.

I’m staring at you now and the way your eyes still glow.

The lightest touch on your back as we dance.

You give me that look that says we just might have a chance

To make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

Let’s make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

We’re dancing so slow.

But I think the band is playing rock and roll.

I just want is to be right here right now with you,

But I can’t wait to try something new.

We’re dancing oh, so slow.

But everyone else is doing that good-time boogie rock and roll.

All I want is to be right here right now with you,

But I can’t wait to try something new.

Are there really a thousand stars here in the skies?

Whirling around us like the stars there in your eyes?

How can it be that we can still be new tonight?

You melting in my arms with a quiet sigh

As we make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

Let’s make some new old memories tonight.

Let’s make some new old memories.

Baby, I'm Yours.

Lyrics

Will You Wake With Me

Will you wake with me in the morning light?

We can watch the sun chase away the night.

We can weave our dreams into precious lives,

As the sun is rising from the sea.

Will you walk with me in the light of day?

We will tend our work while the children play.

We will watch them grow as our dreams unfold,

And the sun is high above the sea.

Is it any wonder

Where we all come from?

We are made from love as surely

As light is from the sun.

Is it any wonder

What we all should be?

We are meant for love as surely

As the waves are meant for the sea.

Will you stay with me in the evening light?

We will watch the sun running from the night.

I will care for you while you care for me,

As the sun is sinking in the sea.

Lyrics

Can We Find Our Way

We seem so angry and lost today.

We fire weapons with the words we say.

How can we bring down these walls we’ve made?

Can we find our way?

I’m judging you while you’re judging me.

We see each other as the enemy.

But there are so many better ways to see.

Can we find our way?

Can we find our way to listen to each other?

To really hear each other?

To respect each other?

Can we find our way to accept each other?

Can we find our way?

What will it take us to understand

Forgiveness is the essence of the plan.

All it takes is reaching out a hand.

Can we find our way?

Can we find our way to sit with each other?

To grieve with each other?

To stay with each other?

Can we find our way to pray with each other?

Can we find our way?

Does it serve us to blame?

Does it serve us to flame?

Does it serve us to name?

Does it serve us to shame?

Can we find a way to laugh?

Can we find a way to lift?

Can we find a way to love?

Can we find a way to live?

Can we find our way to reach each other?

To touch each other?

To feel each other?

Can we find our way to heal each other?

Can we find our way?

Can we find our way?

Can we find our way?
